At the height of the global pandemic in July/August 2020, I hiked a southbound combination of Steve Roper’s Sierra High Route (SHR) and Alan Dixon’s Southern Sierra High Route (SoSHR).
This was a truly magnificent trip. Words can’t do it justice. The Sierras are amazing, of course, but they’re even more amazing off-trail.
The route I took follows the traditional SHR until it deviates just south of Mather Pass, heading off to Kings Canyon National Park. The highlighted green is an alternate overland route to Mt. Baxter, first scouted and described by Jim Yurchenco and Amy Lauterbach.
